Why now

Most leaders haven't been told this: UK employers already have a legal duty to assess work-related stress risk.

The HSE has confirmed increased enforcement on psychosocial risk (stress, workload, burnout) with around 14,000 proactive inspections planned for 2025/26. And ISO 45003, the international standard for psychological health at work, is now what larger clients and tenders reference.

Work-related stress, depression and anxiety account for 964,000 cases and 22.1 million lost working days a year (HSE, 2024/25).

Wellbeing has quietly moved from a perks conversation to a board-level risk. This Scan shows you where you stand: in pounds, and against the standards you're now held to.

Risk

What's changed: a written stress risk assessment is already a legal requirement for UK employers with five or more staff (Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999). The HSE is stepping up enforcement on psychosocial risk from 2025–26, and ISO 45003 is the standard larger clients and tenders now reference. Most leaders haven't been told this yet.
